Family Connections

Family Connections: A Virtual Community for Parents and Caregivers

We invite you to join us!

Hosted by the National Family Support Technical Assistance Center, “Family Connections” is a virtual community for parents and caregivers who support loved ones facing substance use and/or mental health challenges. Families tell us they need credible resources, guidance on accessing help, and the opportunity to connect with others facing similar challenges. Monthly gatherings will focus on a specific topic, provide tips and tools, and offer the opportunity to network with other families. Family Connections takes place the first Thursday of every month at 1:30 p.m. ET*.

Join us February 2nd, 2023 for Broken Ties: Mending, Coping with Separation, Estrangement (*1:30pm ET/12:30pm CT/10:30am PT)

When a child of any age decides to break ties with their parent, caregiver, or family, that estrangement can provoke a wide range of emotions including confusion, guilt, shame, or fear. No matter what contributed to those broken ties – including that child’s mental health and/or substance use challenges – it’s particularly hard when you don’t know why it happened or where they are. So, how do you get to know the child you now have, not the one you thought you knew? How do you manage accepting the “not knowing” and “no contact”?

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will learn about the complexity of parenting a child of any age with mental health and/or substance use issues who has either cut off contact with their parent, caregiver, or family; or chosen to live in unsafe places.
  • Learn what the stressors and challenges are facing parents and caregivers of adult children who are estranged, how you can better support families, and how you might access support for yourself.
  • Acceptance Factor: Learn the tools to help increase resiliency and acceptance of the situation.

Guest Speaker:

  • Claudette Fette, Ph.D., OTR, CRC (Texas), parent, and Mental Health Advocate. She is also the creator of Aaron-Voices, featuring lessons learned and information about best practices supporting children and adults with mental health needs and their families across life stages and settings.
