Show & Tell Time: Veterans Variety & Open Mic Night - Battleship USS Iowa Museum - Los Angeles
Are you a Veterans that’s Got Talent? Are you a Veterans Art & Music Provider? Are you a community member that enjoys great entertainment?

WHATShow & Tell Time is a program of veteran participants, from Los Angeles, the San Diego regions and across the United States, who possess some form of talent, with acts ranging from singing, dancing, comedy, improv, spoken word (oral poetic performances, storytelling, or prose monologues), magic, variety, and other genres.

Veteran-serving non-profits (VSNP) and veteran-community-connected providers (VCCP) specializing in the arts will submit recommendations to Veterans West for our Show & Tell Time talent line up. If openings are available on the evening of the event, veterans who are present and wish to perform, may place themselves on our lottery list.

Veterans West’s mission for this event is to provide a stage and audience for talent within the veteran community in the hopes that through these performances it will pique the interests of talent recruiters, encourage other veteran artists to pursue their own talents and dreams, and will further connect interested participants with veteran groups that provide classes, workshops, and other artistic expression opportunities — many of which are held right on board Battleship IOWA!

Art and music are critical for our veterans. Whether they are exposed to art and music as a child or as an adult, in school or through private or community classes and lessons, the benefits are incredible. Art and music exposure does more than provide a creative outlet; they provide mental, emotional, and educational benefits — and more.

Show & Tell Time is a program designed as a part of the Complimentary & Integrated Health Division of Veterans West at Battleship IOWA. Veterans West offers a unique platform that acknowledges and embraces the inherent differences between veterans, and incorporates those differences into our process, practice, and service-delivery. Differential programs are in place to meet the vast diversity of needs and are focused on peer-based and professional direct services which are administered in-house or by high-quality and best-in-class Veteran-Serving Non-Profits (“VSNP”) and Veteran-Community Connected-Providers (“VCCP”). Our Military and Veterans Affairs programming focuses on honor, community, and prosperity with a holistic focus on a greater quality of life. We serve all veterans and MilFam, including those in-transition and/or already highly seasoned and articulate in the civilian landscape, from every branch and service era (regardless of discharge status) to facilitate opportunities or address challenges in a timely, competent, and supportive manner.

Here are ten incredible reasons our veterans need arts and music in their lives:

1. Music Boosts Brains

Immersing veterans in music can help boost their brain power. Music stimulates the parts of the brain associated with academic achievement, such as reading and math, and emotional development. Instead of viewing music as an extracurricular activity, consider it an overall part of your child’s education.

2. Art Improves Academic Achievement

Veterans involved in the arts have tremendous academic benefits compared to those without exposure to the arts. Art inspires people to excel in and out of the classroom and work environment. It helps with focus, increases motivation, improves attitudes and attendance, and improves performance.

3. Music Can Improve Memory

Research has shown that participation in music can help improve memory. Exposing veterans to music and dancing helps build motor skills. Even adults can experience memory benefits from just listening to music.

4. Music and Art Enhance Creativity

This may sound like an obvious benefit, but the effects of enhanced creativity will extend to many aspects of a veteran’s life. Veterans can develop innovation skills when they’re encouraged to express themselves and take risks in creating art and playing music. Those skills can open doors; 72% of employers say that creativity is the #1 skill they look for when hiring.

5. Music Improves Social Skills

It’s not always team sports that teach important social skills; playing an instrument can help, too. Music groups and ensembles can help veterans develop important life skills such as teamwork, developing leadership skills, discipline, and how to relate to others.

6. Art and Music Enhance Critical Thinking Skills

The creativity involved in art education strengthens critical thinking skills. Visually learning through drawing, sculpting, and painting develops visual-spatial skills. This teaches veterans how to interpret and use visual information. Spatial-temporal reasoning is a precursor to logical thinking, abstract thinking, and problem solving needed for the brain to function in mathematics, engineering, and physics.

7. Art and Music Build Confidence

As veterans develop skills in art and music, and improve those skills through repetition and practice, they build confidence in themselves. Studies have shown that when people participate in arts activities with peers and provide criticism and praise to one another, the feedback they give to each other builds self respect.

8. Art and Music Creates Cultural and Personal Connections

Immersion in art and music can foster a sense of cultural awareness. As veterans interpret visual imagery from artists and learn about art history, it helps them understand the concept of cultural diversity. Seeing a different culture explored through a visual medium such as sculptures or paintings helps people process information differently than reading about it in a text book.

Learning about musical history and exploring different types of music can help veterans connect with different cultures. Art and music help people feel more connected to one another, as well.

9. Art & Music Can Reduce Stress & Increase Community-Connection

Art & music has been shown to help reduce stress and connect individuals to their community. Furthermore, art can also help increase community members’ sense of identity and belonging, which can help reduce feelings of isolation.

10. Art and Music Instills Discipline

Dedicating themselves to art and music teaches important concepts of discipline. While some people may show a natural talent in one area or another, the truth is that ongoing commitment and practice is required to improve. By committing to stick with lessons and practicing outside of classrooms and lessons, veterans learn discipline skills that will benefit them in many aspects of life.

Immersing veterans in the arts and music, at home, through lessons, at school and in the community, provides undeniable benefits that will help them throughout their lives. Come join us – monthly – to watch these incredible artists, mingle with the community, and / or perform live on-stage. Its SHOW & TELL TIME!
