SUMMARY:Contest for Liberty: Military Leadership in the Continental Army\, 1775-1783
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe Contest for Liberty: Military Leadership in the Continental Army\, 1775-1783 with Colonel Sean Sculley\n\n\n\nWinner of the 2019 Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Writing Award for Institutional History\nWhat American Colonial Ideals Shaped Command\, Discipline\, and Honor in the U.S. Armed Forces \nIn the summer of 1775\, a Virginia gentleman-planter was given command of a New England army laying siege to British-occupied Boston. With his appointment\, the Continental Army was born. Yet the cultural differences between those serving in the army and their new commander-in-chief led to conflicts from the very beginning that threatened to end the Revolution before it could start. The key challenge for General George Washington was establishing the standards by which the soldiers would be led by their officers. What kind of man deserved to be an officer? Under what conditions would soldiers agree to serve? And how far could the army and its leaders go to discipline soldiers who violated those enlistment conditions? As historian Seanegan P. Sculley reveals in Contest for Liberty: Military Leadership in the Continental Army\, 1775–1783\, these questions could not be determined by Washington alone. His junior officers and soldiers believed that they too had a part to play in determining how and to what degree their superior officers exercised military authority and how the army would operate during the war. A cultural negotiation concerning the use of and limits to military authority was worked out between the officers and soldiers of the Continental Army; although an unknown concept at the time\, it is what we call leadership today. How this army was led and how the interactions between officers and soldiers from the various states of the new nation changed their understandings of the proper exercise of military authority was finally codified in General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben’s The Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States\, first published in 1779. The result was a form of military leadership that recognized the autonomy of the individual soldiers\, a changing concept of honor\, and a new American tradition of military service. \nSeanegan P. Sculley earned his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and is currently an Assistant Professor of History at the United States Military Academy. He has served in the United States Army as both an enlisted soldier and an officer since 1995. \nGET YOUR TICKETS NOW

SUMMARY:National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day
DESCRIPTION:National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day\n \nClick here to see a full list of military holidays\, birthdays\, anniversaries and observances!\nIn 1953\, the Korean Armistice Agreement ended more than 3 years of brutal fighting against communist expansionism and tyranny on the Korean Peninsula. On National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day\, we honor the brave patriots who secured freedom and democracy in the Republic of Korea\, and we pay tribute to the more than 23\,600 Americans who were killed in action and the more than 103\,000 who were wounded in that conflict. \nThe dedication stone at the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington\, D.C.\, bears the inscription: “Our Nation honors her sons and daughters who answered the call to defend a country they never knew and a people they never met.” The memorial includes an honor roll of Americans killed in action and those missing in action\, and its unique design features statues of a patrol crossing a Korean rice paddy. These figures represent the heroes of our Armed Forces who valiantly served in the Land of the Morning Calm and fought on battlefields such as Inchon\, the Pusan Perimeter\, and the Chosin Reservoir. Today\, this hauntingly beautiful memorial stands as an enduring reminder of what it costs to defend and preserve the democratic principles we hold dear. \n\n \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \nOur ironclad alliance with the Republic of Korea was cemented when the first American troops arrived on its soil to fight for liberty and human dignity. More than six decades after the ceasefire on the Korean Peninsula\, the Republic of Korea is flourishing as a prosperous and peace-loving democracy. Since the signing of the armistice at Panmunjom\, the United States has worked with the Republic of Korea to preserve peace through strength. Our military\, together with our allies\, stands vigilant\, strong\, and “ready to fight tonight” on the ground\, in the air\, and at sea. The phrase “katchi kapshida” — “we go together” — is on the lips of every service member in Korea\, representing generations of Koreans and Americans united by shared sacrifice and a willingness to uphold the cause of freedom no matter the cost. \nToday\, we honor our Korean War veterans for service rendered to both the United States and the Republic of Korea\, and we remember their families who supported them throughout. Sometimes called “The Forgotten War\,” we will always remember the immeasurable cost incurred by those who fought on the Korean Peninsula. The bravery\, tenacity\, and selflessness of our veterans liberated the oppressed\, brought peace and prosperity to a freedom-loving people\, and helped forge our unshakable bonds with the Republic of Korea.

SUMMARY:Anniversary of the Army Chaplain Corps
DESCRIPTION:Anniversary of the Army Chaplain Corps\n \nClick here to see a full list of military holidays\, birthdays\, anniversaries and observances!\nThe U.S. Army Chaplaincy provides religious support to America’s Army while assisting commanders in ensuring the right of free exercise of religion for all Soldiers. In short\, we nurture the living\, care for the wounded\, and honor the fallen. \nSince July 29\, 1775\, approximately 25\,000 Army Chaplains have served as religious and spiritual leaders for 25 million Soldiers and their Families. From military installations to deployed combat units and from service schools to military hospitals\, Army Chaplains and Chaplain Assistants have performed their ministries in the most religiously diverse organization in the world. Always present with their Soldiers in war and in peace\, Army Chaplains have served in more than 270 major wars and combat engagements. Nearly 300 Army Chaplains have laid down their lives in battle. Six have been awarded the Medal of Honor. Their love of God\, Country and the American Soldier has been a beacon of light and a message of hope for all those who have served our nation. Currently\, over 2\,900 Chaplains are serving the Total Army representing over 130 different religious organizations. \n“The U.S. Army Chaplain School was created out of a need to adequately train chaplains to staff the large military force which the United States was creating in 1917\, for service in World War I. The plan for the school was developed by Chaplain (MAJ) Aldred A. Pruden. On 9 February 1918\, the Department approved Chaplain Pruden’s plan and the first session of the Chaplain School commenced on 3 March 1918\, at Fort Monroe\, Virginia. \nChaplain Pruden was appointed as the school’s first commandant\, and for this as well as his role in the development of the school\, he deserves to be called the Father of the U.S. Army Chaplain School. For the second session\, the school moved to Camp Zachary Taylor\, Kentucky. This initial move\, only one month after the first formal session at the school\, was to be a prophetic one\, since it began an odyssey of relocation. \nTo supplement the activities of the school in World War I\, a subsidiary Chaplain School was created in France during early summer of 1918\, and located near the headquarters of the A.E.F. (American Expeditionary Force) at Chaumont. In the general demobilization which followed the end of World War I\, the Chaplain School suspended operations on 16 January 1919. It was reactivated on a permanent basis at Camp Grant\, Illinois\, in April 1920\, with a staff of fifteen and student body of the same size. \n\n \n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); \nIt finally found a more or less stable home at Fort Leavenworth\, Kansas\, in the summer of 1924\, where it would remain located for the next four years. By 1928\, there were only 120 chaplains on active duty in the entire Army\, and the school at Fort Leavenworth that same year trained only one Regular and eleven Reserve chaplains. The next step was an obvious one. The activities of the Chaplain School were suspended (although it was never officially inactivated)\, and would remain so until another war would again see the nation build up its military might and demand chaplains to minister to these forces. \nThe Chaplain School was reactivated in 1942 at Fort Benjamin Harrison\, Indiana. Shortly thereafter it was moved to Harvard University\, staying there until 1944\, when it was transferred to Fort Devens\, Massachusetts\, where it finished out the war. After World War II it was located at Fort Oglethorpe\, Georgia\, and at Carlisle Barracks\, Pennsylvania\, from 1945 to 1951. \nFrom 1951 to 1979 the Chaplain School was situated at four posts in the New York City area: Fort Slocum (1951-1962; Fort Hamilton (1962-1974); Fort Wadsworth (1974-1979); and Fort Monmouth\, New Jersey (1979-1995). The sixteenth move came in 1996\, when the Chaplain School came to its present home at Fort Jackson\, South Carolina. Since the Army Reorganization of 1973\, and the creation of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC)\, the school has been officially called the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School. The school is also the home of the Chaplain Corps since it was formally activated on 29 July 1986.
