Florida Ranks Near Top for its Number of Veteran and Women Owned Businesses
Florida has ranked third in the nation for its number of veteran owned businesses and comes in fourth for its number of women owned businesses.
With 176,727 veteran owned businesses and revenues of $61.9 billion, Florida ranks third for the most veteran-owned businesses in America. That’s according to a recently released report from U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy. Report findings also show 35,548 Florida-based veteran owned businesses provide jobs for 310,154 people with an annual payroll of $10.6 billion.
Veterans own 2.45 million businesses nationally of which about 6 million workers are employed. This accounts for about 9 percent of America’s total businesses. California and Texas surpassed Florida as the states with the most veteran-owned businesses.
“America’s veterans deserve every opportunity possible to benefit from resources that could help them build successful small businesses and create jobs. The FSBDC Network provides targeted programs and services to help veterans successfully transition into owning and operating their own small business,” Florida Small Business Development Center Network (FSBDCN) Director Jerry Cartwright said in a statement to the South Florida Business Journal.
Over the last 10 years, the FSBDC Network has served 26,758 veterans through consulting, training and information. Its efforts have resulted in 1.1 million jobs created and saved; and the creation of 795 new businesses.
The FSBDC Network also proudly celebrated Women’s Small Business Month in October.
According to a U.S. Census report, there are an estimated 8.3 million women-owned businesses in the United States, responsible for generating nearly $1.3 trillion in revenue and employing over 7.7 million people. Since 1997, women-owned small businesses have seen an increase of 54 percent. Florida has seen a growth increase of 73.9 percent in the number of women small businesses in the last 15 years, ranking it as the 6th fastest growing state for women-owned businesses. Florida has an estimated 587,600 women-owned firms, employing 473,100 and attributing roughly $77.6 billion in revenue.
