Born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee, Freeman enlisted in the Air Force in 1955 at just 18 years old, turning down a drama scholarship to pursue his dream of aviation. He served until 1959 as a radar repairman, helping maintain critical radar systems supporting aircraft operations during the Cold War.
Though he originally hoped to become a fighter pilot, Morgan later shared that once he sat in the cockpit, he realized flying wasn’t his true calling. That moment ultimately led him toward acting—and one of the most celebrated careers in entertainment history.
