⚾ Happy Angel Birthday to baseball legend and decorated WWII veteran Yogi Berra! 🇺🇸⚓
Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra was born on May 12, 1925 and passed away on September 22, 2015 at the age of 90.
Yogi Berra was far more than a New York Yankees legend — he was an American hero. Before becoming one of the greatest catchers, coaches, and personalities in Major League Baseball history, Berra proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.
During the Normandy landings on D-Day, Berra served as a gunner’s mate aboard the attack transport USS Bayfield. A Seaman Second Class, he was one of a six-man crew aboard a Navy rocket boat that fired machine guns and launched rockets at German defenses on Omaha Beach during the invasion of Normandy.
Berra and his fellow sailors came under enemy fire while carrying out their dangerous mission, but he continued serving courageously and later received several commendations and honors for his military service, including:
