Happy Heavenly Birthday Bob Newhart — Comedy Legend, Army Veteran & American Icon
🎂🇺🇸 Happy Heavenly Birthday to Bob Newhart!
Born September 5, 1929, Bob Newhart became one of America’s most beloved comedians and television stars — but before the comedy albums, television classics and Hollywood roles, he served his country in the United States Army.
Newhart was drafted into the Army in 1952 during the Korean War era and served stateside in personnel before being discharged in 1954.
He would go on to entertain generations of Americans with his unmistakable deadpan delivery, starring in The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, and later introducing himself to entirely new generations through memorable roles in Elf, The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon.
🇺🇸 And Bob Newhart wasn’t the only veteran on these classic shows.
Several of the actors who helped make The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart television favorites also served in the U.S. military:
⭐ Bill Daily (Howard Borden) — Served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era before beginning his entertainment career.
⭐ Peter Bonerz (Dr. Jerry Robinson) — Served in the U.S. Army before his career as an actor and television director.
⭐ Tom Poston (George Utley) — Served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. After completing flight training, Poston served as a pilot in the European Theater. His wartime service included flying aircraft that carried paratroopers during operations associated with the Normandy invasion.
⭐ William Sanderson (Larry) — Served in the U.S. Army before becoming an actor and delivering one of Newhart’s most unforgettable introductions: “Hi. I’m Larry. This is my brother Darryl, and this is my other brother Darryl.”
That means some of the familiar faces who made us laugh on these two legendary television series shared something much bigger than comedy:
They served our country. 🇺🇸
Bob Newhart passed away on July 18, 2024, at the age of 94, leaving behind more than six decades of laughter and an extraordinary entertainment legacy.
Today, on what would have been his 97th birthday, we remember the comedian, the actor, the television legend — and the United States Army veteran.
🎂 Happy Heavenly Birthday, Bob Newhart.
🇺🇸 Thank you for your service — and thank you for a lifetime of laughter.
