Born Leonard Hacker in Brooklyn, New York, Buddy Hackett became one of America’s most recognizable comedians and character actors. Generations of fans remember him from classics including The Love Bug, The Music Man, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and as the unforgettable voice of Scuttle in Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
But before entertaining millions on stage and screen, Hackett served his country.
After graduating from high school in 1942, Hackett enlisted in the United States Army during World War II, serving for three years in an anti-aircraft battery before beginning the entertainment career that would make him a household name.
On his Heavenly Birthday, we remember Buddy Hackett not only for the laughter and memorable characters he gave generations of fans, but also for his service to our country.
