🇺🇸 James Arness: WWII Hero, Gunsmoke Legend & Purple Heart Recipient | Never Forgotten

Today we honor James Arness — beloved actor, American war hero, and forever remembered as Marshal Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke.
Before becoming one of television’s most iconic Western stars, Arness proudly served in the United States Army during World War II.
James Arness originally hoped to become a naval fighter pilot, but his dream was cut short—not by his eyesight as he feared—but by his incredible height. Standing 6 feet 7½ inches tall, he was well above the military height limit for aviators at the time.
Instead, Arness was drafted into the U.S. Army in March 1943 and reported to Fort Snelling, Minnesota.
🪖 During WWII, James Arness:
• Served as a rifleman in the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division
• Assigned to 2nd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment
• Landed at the Anzio Beachhead in Italy on January 22, 1944
• Because of his height, was ordered off the landing craft first to determine the water depth before the rest of the platoon entered
• Fought in the brutal Battle of Anzio
• Was severely wounded in his right leg during combat
After being wounded, Arness was medically evacuated from Italy back to the United States and spent months recovering at the 91st General Hospital in Clinton, Iowa. He underwent multiple surgeries and was honorably discharged from the Army on January 29, 1945.
Although he recovered and went on to star in Hollywood, his wartime injuries remained with him for the rest of his life. He suffered chronic leg pain for decades, including while riding horses during filming of Gunsmoke.

• Bronze Star
• Purple Heart
• American Campaign Medal
• European–African–Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze battle stars and arrowhead device
• World War II Victory Medal
• Combat Infantryman Badge
Following the war, Arness became a television legend, starring as Marshal Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke for 20 seasons—one of the longest-running primetime dramas in television history.
