Today, September 29, we recognize National VFW Day and celebrate the 127th anniversary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW).

The story of the VFW began on September 29, 1899, when a small group of veterans gathered in a tailor shop in Columbus, Ohio. These veterans of the Spanish-American War came together with a simple but important purpose: to find ways to assist their fellow veterans and the families of those who had fallen.

At the time, many veterans returned home wounded or sick with little assistance available to them. According to the VFW, there was no government-provided medical care or veterans pension system available to many of these returning veterans, leaving them and their families to face tremendous challenges on their own.

The organization founded that September evening was originally known as the American Veterans of Foreign Service. Similar organizations representing veterans of overseas conflicts formed elsewhere in the country, including groups in Colorado and Pennsylvania. These organizations eventually came together, and on August 1, 1914, the organization became known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

🎖️ 127 YEARS LATER — STILL SERVING

From those humble beginnings, the VFW has grown into a nationwide organization representing generations of American veterans who served overseas.

Today, the VFW and its Auxiliary comprise a network of more than 1.3 million members, continuing a tradition of advocating for veterans, assisting military families, serving local communities and helping veterans obtain the benefits they have earned.

The VFW describes its mission as fostering camaraderie among U.S. veterans of overseas conflicts, serving veterans, the military and communities, and advocating on behalf of all veterans.

📅 WHEN IS NATIONAL VFW DAY?

National VFW Day is observed every year on September 29, commemorating the founding of the organization on September 29, 1899. VFW Posts and communities across the country and around the world use the occasion to recognize the organization, its members and their continuing service to veterans and their communities.

This year is especially significant:
