During a recent medical appointment at the Lake Nona Veteran Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Orlando, Florida, I wandered through its expansive and remarkable facility. Amid my exploration, I discovered an elaborate and deeply patriotic exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of National Vietnam War Veterans Day, also known as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. Behind the display stood a smaller replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Signs honoring Medal of Honor Day were also scattered throughout, catching my eye from the start (watch this 22 second video here!). *Keep reading to understand what these tributes mean to those of us who’ve served.
I hold firm to the wisdom of our first President, George Washington: “The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.”
One of my favorite parts of visiting the VA Medical Center is the chance to meet and connect with fellow veterans and their families—men and women who proudly served our nation and share an unwavering love for the USA. Most people I encounter there, whether veterans, military spouses, or “military brats,” are warm, fiercely patriotic, and eager to strike up a conversation with a stranger, especially about their time in service.
*For those unfamiliar: The Medal of Honor is the United States Armed Forces’ highest military decoration, awarded for extraordinary valor.
*The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, often called “The Wall,” is a national tribute in Washington, DC, dedicated to U.S. service members who fought in the Vietnam War. Spanning two acres, it features two black granite walls inscribed with the names of those who died or remain missing from the conflict in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Completed in 1982, the memorial—located in Constitution Gardens near the Lincoln Memorial—later gained additions like the Three Soldiers statue (1984) and the Vietnam Women’s Memorial (1993). Maintained by the National Park Service, it draws about three million visitors annually. Though initially criticized for its minimalist design, it has since earned widespread respect. Ever wonder how many brothers are listed on the Wall? How many died on their first day in Vietnam—or their last? *Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day: Enacted in 2017 through the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act, March 29 is designated annually as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. It’s a time to honor the sacrifices of Vietnam veterans and their families, recognizing those who were denied a proper homecoming after the war’s end.
