Quickly and Easily Spot Bogus Credit Card Emails (Phishing and/or Spoofing)

Wanted to share this message about quickly and easily spotting bogus emails (phishing and/or spoofing). Some are very detailed and look like they are 100% genuine. Most have typos/poor grammar. Most also have links that link to sites in other countries [see a lot that link to Poland (.pl)] in the link. But some are like the one in this image that give you a sign right away that they are bogus! This one is trying to look like it’s coming to our CapitalOne credit card account (we do not have a CapitalOne account). Notice how the return URL is @ Capital0ne.com (circled). With a quick glance, you may not notice that the “o” is actually a “0 (zero)”. Classic move by scumbags trying to take your hard earned money. Be careful not to click on any of the links! Delete it right away unless you have the knowledge to report it!

If you care to take further action (and have the knowledge), you can actually find the header info for the email. Copy all of it. Forward the email to the company being spoofed (in this case abuse@CaptialOne.com) and include the header you just copied at the top of the email. You’ll typically get an automatic response from most companies thanking you for helping them prevent fraud. Once again… if anything in this paragraph confuses you, just delete the bogus email you received… but definitely keep an eye out for these obvious signs!
