May 1st, 2012 is Silver Star Service Banner Day and Loyalty Day! Veteran Owned Business Military Observance Announcement

This is a Veteran Owned Business Military Observance Announcement:

May 1st, 2012 is Silver Star Service Banner Day

Silver Star Service Banner Day was created by The Silver Star Families of America (SSFOA); a 501(c) tax exempt organization dedicated to honoring and supporting wounded, ill, and injured veterans of all branches of the armed forces of the United States of America.

On April 21, 2010, the United States House of Representatives passed H Res. 855, a stand alone resolution, making the SSFOA Silver Star Service Banner official and making May 1 Silver Star Service Banner Day.  On May 19, 2010 the United States Senate followed suit and approved Senate Resolution 534 and it was sent to the President of the United States.

On April 29th, 2011 the President of the United States Barack Obama issued this statement: “When our men and women in uniform return from deployment, it is our moral obligation and great honor to serve them as well as they served us.  Our debt of gratitude extends to their families and friends, who embody the same qualities of bravery, sacrifice and duty exhibited by their loved ones.  On Silver Star Service Banner Day, we recommit to caring for those who return to us wounded or ill, and we remain humbled by the heroic contributions they have made to our Nation.”

May 1st, 2012 is Loyalty Day

Loyalty Day was first observed in 1921 as “Americanization Day,” and was intended to counterbalance the celebration of Labour Day/International Worker’s Day on May Day (May 1), an internationally celebrated holiday for the commemoration of the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago in 1886.

It was made an official holiday by the U.S. Congress on July 18, 1958 (Public Law 85-529).  Following the passage of this law, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed May 1, 1959 the first official observance of Loyalty Day.  Most Presidents have followed suit.

Last year’s Loyalty Day proclamation included this:  “…In order to recognize the American spirit of loyalty and the sacrifices that so many have made for our Nation, the Congress, by Public Law 85-529 as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as “Loyalty Day.” On this day, let us reaffirm our allegiance to the United States of America, our Constitution, and our founding values.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2011, as Loyalty Day. This Loyalty Day, I call upon all the people of the United States to join in support of this national observance, whether by displaying the flag of the United States or pledging allegiance to the Republic for which it stands.”  (See the entire proclamation at WhiteHouse.gov)
