Silver Star Service Banner Day was established by the Silver Star Families of America (SSFOA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization devoted to honoring and supporting our nation’s wounded, ill, and injured service members across all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

In 2010, this meaningful recognition gained national prominence. On April 21, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H. Res. 855, officially recognizing the Silver Star Service Banner and designating May 1 as Silver Star Service Banner Day. Less than a month later, on May 19, the U.S. Senate reinforced that commitment by approving Senate Resolution 534, sending it forward for presidential acknowledgment.

On April 29, 2011, President Barack Obama underscored the importance of this day with a powerful message:
“When our men and women in uniform return from deployment, it is our moral obligation and great honor to serve them as well as they served us. Our debt of gratitude extends to their families and friends, who embody the same qualities of bravery, sacrifice, and duty exhibited by their loved ones. On Silver Star Service Banner Day, we recommit to caring for those who return to us wounded or ill, and we remain humbled by the heroic contributions they have made to our Nation.”
