Disaster Response Team Rubicon Deploys to Eastern Seaboard

Superstorm Sandy has taken its toll on the northeastern states.

In its largest mobilization to date — Operation Greased Lightning — Team Rubicon has called upon the skills and resources of 1000 veterans to take charge of response and relief operations throughout Long Island’s Nassau County.  In response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy, Team Rubicon has also moved its Los Angeles headquarters and staff to Long Island, New York.

Team Rubicon was founded by two former marines, William McNulty and Jacob Wood.   In 2010, McNulty and Wood self-deployed with other veterans in response to Haiti’s earthquake.  Wood was applying to business school, and McNulty was thinking about filmmaking.  In response to Haiti’s disaster, they recruited a handful of other veterans and medical professionals and found that their services were desperately needed.  In the immediate aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, Team Rubicons military veterans realized a simple truth – natural disasters present many of the same problems that confront troops in Iraq and Afghanistan: unstable populations, limited resources, horrific sights, sounds and smells.  They realized that the skills they cultivated on battlefields – emergency medicine, risk assessment and mitigation, teamwork and decisive leadership – are invaluable in disaster zones.\

Missions to Chile, Pakistan, and South Sudan followed in quick succession and, this year alone, there have been 22 missions.  Team Rubicon has mobilized for tornados in Alabama, Missouri, Texas, and across the Midwest, as well as hurricanes in Maryland and Louisiana.  More than 4,500 veterans have participated in these deployments.  Response to Superstorm Sandy is the biggest effort thus far.  Eleven Rubicon teams have fanned out across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, fixing roofs, clearing debris, and quarterbacking the recovery.
