Sons of East Tennessee: Civil War Veterans Divided & Reconciled - Book Talk
Brown Bag 2022 Lecture Series with Jack Brubaker

Author Jack Brubaker will discuss his new book, Sons of East Tennessee: Civil War Veterans Divided and Reconciled. Published by McFarland early this year, the book tells the long-lost story of two aging Civil War veterans mourning the death of their sons at a joint funeral in Knoxville National Cemetery in 1899. One father, Gen. Reuben F. Bernard, a native of Hawkins County, had fought as a Union cavalry officer. The other, William A. McCorkle, a doctor from Hawkins County, had served as surgeon of a Confederate cavalry regiment. They met for the first time at the graves of their sons, army lieutenants and University of Tennessee graduates killed together in Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

This lecture is a partnership with Union Ave Books.

Jack Brubaker writes a weekly column exploring area history and culture for LNP, the daily newspaper in Lancaster, Pa. He is a retired investigative reporter for LNP. He has written seven books, including Down the Susquehanna to the Chesapeake (Penn State Press, 2002) and Massacre of the Conestogas (The History Press, 2010).
