January 12 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST

Start-up Strategies for Scaling Building and Team Building with Team Rubicon

Event Information

Join us for a special session on how Jake Wood built Team Rubicon, from Frontlines to the Homefront.

What mindset and skillsets do I need to develop to become a strong entrepreneur? How do I take my experiences in the military and build these values into my company and its culture?

In this virtual session, Jake will help veteran entrepreneurs to think about what they need to know as they are wanting to start their own business. How do skills from the military transition into business and what kind of mindset does this require? The session will also include tactical skills and actions Jake took to build Team Rubicon.

In particular, we will address the following topics:

  • Skills and strategies taken from active duty service that help with starting your own venture
  • How do these experiences help you become a better CEO, founder, culture creator?
  • How do you balance mindset and skillset development when thinking about a new venture

OUR SPECIAL GUEST

Jake WoodCofounder & CEO of Team Rubicon

Jake Wood is cofounder and CEO of Team Rubicon, the only nonprofit disaster response organization that utilizes the skills of military veterans to rapidly deploy emergency response teams. In giving veterans an opportunity to continue their service, Team Rubicon provides them with a sense of purpose, community and identity. Since the organization’s founding in 2010 following the devastating Haiti earthquake, Team Rubicon has responded to over 700 disasters and grown from eight to 130,000 volunteer members. Under Wood’s leadership, the organization has responded top high-profile disasters like the 2011 tornado in Joplin, Missouri, Hurricane Sandy, the 2013 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, the 2015 earthquakes in Nepal and the devastating hurricanes in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico in 2017. Team Rubicon has been finished in the top three of the Nonprofit Times’ “Top Nonprofit To Work For in America” lists three years in a row.

As a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps, Wood deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as a Scout Sniper and earned the Navy-Marine Commendation Medal. A leading veterans’ advocate, Wood has briefed President Obama on veterans’ issues, met with former Presidents Bush and Clinton on veteran transition and disaster response and testified before a Senate committee to improve mental health care services for returning veterans. He has also appeared in the major media, including MSNBC, CNN, NBC, ABC, Al Jazeera, US News & World Report, Forbes, Fox News and penned op-eds for The New York Times, TIME Magazine, USA Today and Forbes. In 2020, Sentinel Books will publish Wood’s memoir Once A Warrior: How One Veteran Found a New Mission Closer to Home.

Wood has received numerous awards including: The Pat Tillman Award For Courage; Chronicle of Philanthropy’s “40 Under Forty”; Goldman Sachs “100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs” award; and was selected as a CNN Hero in 2012.
