Four Tools for More Profitable Small Business Negotiation

Negotiation is a critical skill for small business owners and operators, as it directly impacts profitability and growth. Successful negotiation can lead to better deals with suppliers, customers, employees, and partners. In clear, straightforward language, this workshop will help you understand and apply a proven method for more profitable small business negotiation — one built on understanding power and using it to find agreements that work for both parties.

  • This workshop introduces a power-based framework and four practical tools:
  • Understanding and Managing Power — the foundation for every decision you make in a negotiation
  • Setting Assertive Goals — targets, opening offers, and walk-away points calibrated to your actual power position
  • Framing Advantageously — shifting the conversation from price to the value, opportunity, and risk that really matter
  • Anchoring Expectations — shaping the other party’s sense of what’s possible from the first offer
  • Exchanging Value — identifying and executing trades that create more value and lead to more satisfying agreements for both parties
  • The session closes with a practical planning tool that ties all four tools together and that you can use to prepare for your own negotiations.
