Humana Wins CEAC Veterans Employer of the Year Award
Health and well-being company recognized for its veterans hiring efforts
LOS ANGELES, May 16, 2014 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Thanks to its efforts hiring veterans and their spouses, Humana Inc. (NYSE:HUM) , a leading health and well-being company, was recently announced the winner of the 2014 Veterans Employer of the Year Award. The award is given by the California Employer Advisory Council (CEAC) in partnership with the California Employment Development Department (EDD).
The award honors an employer who consistently demonstrates policies toward U.S. veterans and goes the extra mile to hire, retain, and promote them providing training and benefits. Eligibility for the award is limited to California employers who are in compliance with all national, state and local laws.
Humana won in the Private, Large Business (100 or more employees) category.

In August 2011, as part of President Obama’s challenge to U.S. employers to hire 100,000 military veterans and veterans’ spouses over a three-year period, Humana pledged to hire 1,000 former servicemen and servicewomen or their spouses by late 2014. Humana’s Veterans Initiative was born from this pledge. The Veterans Initiative looks to serve veterans and their family members in three ways: jobs, entrepreneurship and well-being.
In January 2013, Humana announced it had surpassed its goal of hiring 1,000 veterans and/or their spouses and made a new commitment to hire an additional 1,000 over the next two years.
“Unfortunately, the unemployment rate for veterans is often far higher than their non-veteran counterparts,” said Brown. “In our experience, military veterans and their spouses are extremely capable, highly motivated and make an immediate impact when they come to work at Humana. We are proud to hire veterans and their spouses and we encourage other companies to follow suit.”
