🎬 Harvey Keitel (born May 13, 1939) turns 87 years young today. Before becoming one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, Keitel proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. He later built an extraordinary acting career starring in legendary films including Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, The Piano, National Treasure and many more. Known for his intense performances and collaborations with director Martin Scorsese and filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, Keitel became one of the defining actors of modern American cinema.
🎭 We also remember Bea Arthur, born May 13, 1922. Before becoming a television icon, Arthur served in the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during World War II. She later rose to fame as the sharp-witted Maude Findlay in the groundbreaking sitcom Maude, earning Emmy recognition for tackling serious social issues through comedy. Arthur would later become beloved worldwide as Dorothy Zbornak in The Golden Girls, helping create one of television’s most enduring and celebrated sitcoms. Her stage, television and Broadway career spanned decades and earned multiple awards and accolades.
🥊 We also salute Joe Louis, born May 13, 1914, one of the greatest heavyweight champions in boxing history. Nicknamed “The Brown Bomber,” Joe Louis held the world heavyweight championship for nearly 12 years — longer than any heavyweight champion in history. During World War II, Louis served in the United States Army and participated in numerous exhibition matches to boost troop morale and raise support for military relief efforts. Beyond sports, he became a major American cultural figure whose success helped break racial barriers during a difficult era in American history.
