Donald Tai Loy Ho was born August 13, 1930, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Long before becoming one of Hawaii’s most recognizable entertainers, Don Ho proudly served his country as an officer in the United States Air Force.
🇺🇸 Don Ho’s Military Service
Don Ho served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1959. After completing primary training at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi, he flew C-97 Stratofreighters with the Military Air Transport Service and was later stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California.
It was during his Air Force years that Ho purchased his first electronic keyboard—helping spark the musical journey that would eventually make him a Hawaiian entertainment legend.
🌺 From Air Force Officer to Hawaiian Music Icon
Raised in Kāneʻohe on the island of Oʻahu, Ho graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 1949 and earned a sociology degree from the University of Hawaiʻi in 1953.
After leaving the Air Force in 1959, he returned home to help his mother with the family bar, Honey’s, in Kāneʻohe. The venue became popular with locals and Marines, and Ho’s performances eventually launched a remarkable entertainment career.
His signature song, “Tiny Bubbles,” became synonymous with Don Ho and helped introduce generations of fans around the world to his unmistakable Hawaiian style.
Don Ho died in 2007, but his music, personality, military service and contributions to Hawaiian entertainment continue to be remembered.
