Today marks the 236th birthday of the United States Coast Guard, one of America’s oldest military services and a branch whose history stretches back to the earliest days of our nation.
On August 4, 1790, President George Washington signed the Tariff Act authorizing the construction of ten vessels known as Revenue Cutters. Their mission was simple but vital: enforce federal tariff laws, prevent smuggling and protect the young nation’s economy. That small fleet would eventually grow into today’s United States Coast Guard, one of the world’s most versatile and respected maritime organizations.
For more than two centuries, Coast Guard men and women have protected America’s shores, ports, rivers and waterways while standing watch around the globe. The service has evolved alongside our nation, adapting to new missions while never losing sight of its core values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty.
A Legacy of Service
The Coast Guard officially received its current name in 1915, when Congress merged the Revenue Cutter Service with the U.S. Life-Saving Service, creating a single maritime organization dedicated to both saving lives at sea and enforcing the nation’s maritime laws.
Its responsibilities continued to expand:
- In 1939, the U.S. Lighthouse Service was transferred to the Coast Guard, placing America’s lighthouses and navigation aids under its care.
- In 1946, the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation became part of the Coast Guard, adding merchant mariner licensing and vessel safety oversight.
Long before the Department of the Navy existed, the Revenue Cutter Service served as the nation’s only armed force afloat. Today, the Coast Guard continues to serve in every major conflict while carrying out lifesaving missions every single day.
Although it operates under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime, the Coast Guard may operate as part of the Department of the Navy during wartime or whenever directed by the President.
A Mission Unlike Any Other
Unlike many military organizations that primarily train for future conflicts, the Coast Guard is deployed every day protecting the American people.

- Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE)

- Drug and Human Trafficking Interdiction
