While known for starring roles in classics like It’s a Wonderful Life and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stewart’s true legacy shines through his remarkable military service.

At age 33, during #WorldWarII, Jimmy Stewart enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces, the predecessor to the United States Air Force, when military aviation was still under Army command. A skilled pilot, he flew combat missions over Europe, transferring to the 445th Bombardment Group. Stewart led his squadron on high-stakes raids, including a pivotal 1943 mission against Schweinfurt, Germany, targeting Nazi ball-bearing factories critical to their war effort. His courage earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and other honors.

In 1947, the National Security Act transformed the Army Air Forces into the independent U.S. Air Force, reflecting the growing importance of air power. Stewart continued his service in the Air Force Reserve, contributing to the #VietnamWar effort. By age 50, he achieved the rank of Brigadier General, becoming the highest-ranking actor in military history. In 1985, at age 77, President Ronald Reagan promoted him to Major General on the reserve list and awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, recognizing his lifelong dedication to country and culture.
