Happy Heavenly Birthday, Jack Dempsey (June 24, 1895 – May 31, 1983) | Famous Veterans

Today we remember and honor World Heavyweight Champion boxer and Coast Guard officer Jack Dempsey, one of the most famous athletes of the 20th century and a proud military veteran.
Known as the “Manassa Mauler,” Dempsey became one of boxing’s biggest stars, holding the World Heavyweight Championship from 1919 to 1926 and helping transform professional boxing into a major spectator sport.
When the United States entered World War II, Dempsey once again answered the call to serve. He initially joined the New York State Guard as a First Lieutenant before resigning that commission to accept a commission as a Lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. Reporting for duty in June 1942, Dempsey spent the war supporting troop morale, physical fitness programs, recruiting efforts, and military exhibitions. He eventually attained the rank of Commander in the Coast Guard Reserve.
From heavyweight champion to Coast Guard officer, Jack Dempsey demonstrated that service to country extends far beyond the athletic arena.
Happy Heavenly Birthday, Commander Jack Dempsey, and thank you for your service and your legacy.
