Happy Heavenly Birthday Lee Powell (1912–1944) | First Lone Ranger & WWII Marine Hero | Famous Veterans
Happy Heavenly Birthday to Sgt. Lee Powell, born July 17, 1912.
Before becoming one of Hollywood’s earliest Lone Rangers, Lee Powell proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Powell enlisted in 1942, rose to the rank of Sergeant, and fought in the legendary Battles of Tarawa and Saipan as part of the 2nd Marine Division.
Lee Powell tragically passed away on July 30, 1944, during the Pacific campaign on Tinian Island at only 32 years old. While many reports initially stated he was killed in action, Marine Corps records later documented his death as resulting from wood alcohol poisoning during post-battle celebrations following the Allied victory.
Initially buried on Tinian, Sgt. Powell was later laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Today we honor the life, service, sacrifice, and legacy of a Hollywood actor who traded the silver screen for the battlefield during WWII.
🇺🇸 Semper Fi and Happy Heavenly Birthday, Sgt. Lee Powell.
